SALINAS, CA, August 29, 2005 — The Board of
LandWatch Monterey County announced today its unanimous
and enthusiastic endorsement of the incorporation
of Carmel Valley. Based on the economic studies
prepared by the Local Agency Formation Commission
(LAFCO), the Town of Carmel Valley will be fiscally
viable in the long-term based on existing land uses
and revenue sources. The town will also be able
to meet its fiscal obligations to the County after
incorporation.
Residents of Carmel Valley initiated the incorporation
proposal after being continually frustrated that
the Board of Supervisors was ignoring local wishes
and approving large scale, exclusive development
projects. Over the past five years, these developments
worsened traffic, water, air quality, and the overall
quality of life in the Valley and provided virtually
no affordable housing. Residents see incorporation
as a way to regain control of the destiny of their
community and ensure that new development meets
the needs to the Carmel Valley.
“It is absolutely clear that the pro-development
majority on the Board of Supervisors has ignored
the best interests of Carmel Valley for years,”
said Executive Director Chris Ftiz. Fitz went on
to say, “At this point, incorporation is the
best avenue available for Carmel Valley residents
to gain control of their future and quality of life.”
“Establishing a Town of Carmel Valley will
advance LandWatch's interests in good land use planning
and grassroots democracy in Monterey County,”
said LandWatch Board President Michael DeLapa .
Both DeLapa and Fitz stressed that they look forward
to a close working relationship between LandWatch
and the new Town of Carmel Valley for many years
to come.
